Amazon’s Disability & Leave Services (DLS) team in the HR Services organization is building a best-in-class case management program to deliver leave of absence, disability and accommodation services to Amazon employees across Canada.

The Sr ASL Interpreter Specialist is a key member of our Accommodation team, providing ASL interpreting services to Amazon applicants, candidates and/or employees who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The interpreter assignments may include in-person services for group meetings or events, as well as meetings with individual employees. Interpreter services will also be delivered via video conference. An Interpreter can be assigned to work primarily with a single employee for all or part of their work days, permanently or temporarily; and can move between local site areas to follow customer need. The Interpreter is a subject matter expert in ASL interpretation services, with the ability to offer consultation and collaborate across teams to solve complex problems in language accommodation. Successful interpreters are highly skilled, adept in responding to changing circumstances and needs of a dynamic culture, and paves the way for a connected and trusted accommodation experience. The Interpreter will be called upon to provide general dialogic interpretation, including conversations of a sensitive nature, such as performance management or review. In addition, stage events and recorded presentation or meeting-style circumstances are common. Interpretation in this role may also involve periods of standing, and walking in a fast paced environment with possible varied noise levels.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Arrive to shifts and assignments on time and prepared for work. Flexible in work hours to support meetings
  • Provide subject matter expertise to Amazon’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing accommodation center of expertise
  • Hire, develop and lead a group of 4-6 interpreters on the Amazon team
  • Multi-task between interpreting effectively while using video-based technology
  • Collaborate in a professional manner with team
  • Provide effective communication in a video environment and/or on-site services environment.
  • Work effectively with minimal supervision
  • Address and respond to sensitive situations
  • Demonstrate high quality American Sign Language, spoken and written English skills
  • Adhere to all government regulations pertaining to VRS and VRI
  • Provide interpreting services for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and hearing stakeholders in a variety of settings
  • Provide stellar customer service to both internal and external customers
  • Partner with the program leadership to effectively utilize third party interpreters and services
  • Participate in program development and process improvement

Job Requirements:

  • Fluency in both American Sign Language and English with superior sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign language skills
  • AVLIC membership
  • Two years of virtual (video) VRI, VRS or other on demand interpreter services.
  • CASLI, AQILS and OTTIAQ Member
  • One year of scheduling oversight experience
  • Multilingual skills (French, LSQ)
  • One year of team lead or supervisor/manager experience
  • 5 years Experience interpreting in technology-relevant or warehouse environments
  • Certificate of Interpretation (COI) from Canada Evaluation System
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills, both verbal & in writing
  • Experience interpreting in technology-relevant environments (with computer programmers, technology workers, software designers, etc.)
  • 8 years of related professional interpreting experience, with strong demonstrated experience interpreting in the technology work environment
  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
  • Experience collaborating and/or scheduling CART providers
  • RID or BEI Certification
