Job Description:

The Utility Worker (UW) fulfills various aspects of maintenance operations and performs relief work under various classifications. This includes clean and replace meter boxes; inspect, repair and perform maintenance on water mains; clean and paint station/treatment plant equipment and appurtenances; customer service related to delivery of water service including read meters, verify meter data; repair and replace residential meters; and wastewater treatment facilities, sewer collections, and pump station maintenance.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Operate a Company vehicle for travel to work areas, safely navigating, and parking vehicle as designated to ensure public and personal safety in all job tasks. Apply knowledge of structures, main, and water system to evaluate and assess response strategies, and confirm work task with Superintendent, when appropriate.
  • Excavate, dig, and expose service/main leaks; isolate damage and repair or replace assets.
  • Collect water samples to a minor extent.
  • Prepare and operate service truck(s) daily including load needed materials and equipment, remove and dispose of debris, clean equipment and truck as needed.
  • Change, repair, and clean 5/8” through 1” size meters, boxes, meter box lids, valve casings, and hydrants; flush and perform maintenance on all necessary functions of mains to a minor extent; flush and repaint hydrants.
  • Assist in setting, replacing, or removing 1-1/2” and 2” size meters.
  • Communicate with office staff and supervisor including radio communications, phone communications, completion of reports, and provide daily logs of services performed.

Job Requirements:

  • Forklift certification is required for operation when needed.
  • A Utility Worker must be able to effectively communicate with their supervisor, co-workers, contractors, and the public;
  • Employee must be able to work without supervision and respond appropriately to feedback, evaluation, coaching, counseling, and/or discipline.
  • Have the ability to perform basic mathematic functions to calculate figures and amounts; have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; and ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Possess a Hawaii Class C Driver’s license, and be insurable under the Company’s policy.
  • Employee must possess a High School diploma or equivalent
