Job Description:
Under medical or licensed nursing supervision, perform simple nursing tasks involved in the care of physically ill or disabled patients in a State correctional facility in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, assist the physician or nurse with examination and treatments of patients, motivate and assist patients in developing and utilizing their maximum potential for self-care, maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates, youthful offenders, or patients, protect and maintain the safety of persons and property, maintain security of work areas and work materials, and do other related work.
Job Responsibilities:
- Obtains specimens for diagnostic testing in compliance with Department policies and procedures.
- Obtains and documents clinical data such as vital signs, height, weight, and observations of patient behavior and health status and reports results to the appropriate nursing staff.
- Measures and records the amount of intake and output of fluids and assists with meeting hydration needs.
- In collaboration with the health care team, assist patients in activities such as bed sitting, muscle toning, and improving range of motion to increase the ability to perform daily living activities.
- Keeps patients dry and clean and provides clean clothing and linen as appropriate.
- Provides general physical and personal patient care including oral hygiene, bathing, showering, toileting, assistance with ambulation, and positioning and turning patients as needed.
- Assists and encourages patients in using the special devices and equipment prescribed for physical comfort and/or rehabilitation.
- Observes and records changes to the patient’s condition, and reports the findings to the care team, RN, and supervisor.
- Administers basic life support in emergency situations.
Job Requirements:
- Ability to develop skills in the performance of routine hospital, clinic, inpatient and/or outpatient settings, techniques of bathing, feeding, lifting and transporting patients/residents/clients or inmates, making beds, and caring for patients/residents/clients or inmates’ clothing and other property.
- Ability to assist medically trained personnel.
- Ability to communicate at the level required for successful job performance.
- Ability to keep simple records.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to analyze situations accurately and participate in an appropriate course of action.
Qualification & Experience:
- Possession of a valid Nursing Assistant Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health.
