Job Description:

This position will assess the feasibility of establishing an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) on Aboriginal Land Trusts (ALTs) spanning the Simpson Desert (Atnetye, Pmere Nyente, Aputula and Pmer Ulperre Ingwermine Arletherre ALTs) situated to the east and south east of Alice Springs. Job Responsibilities:

• Conduct a consultation and planning process with traditional owners and affected Aboriginal communities to ascertain the feasibility of declaration of an IPA over the above listed ALTs (or parts there of).
• Consult traditional owners and relevant stakeholders regarding the size, level of protection and management priorities relating to natural and cultural resource management of proposed IPA.
• Develop a Plan of Management (POM) for the proposed IPA in accordance with the ‘Our Country, Our Way’ guidelines for Australian Indigenous Protected Area Management Plans, including;
• Collate available information on the natural and cultural values of the project area relevant to establishing its regional and national significance.
• Formulate specific management strategies for the preservation and restoration of sites of natural and cultural value e.g. Sites of cultural significance, flora and fauna, threatened species, invasive species.
• Formulate and conduct an appropriate process of consultation to obtain the informed views of traditional owners on the draft POM and seek their approval of a final POM which addresses any issues identified.
• Integrate regional and national environmental strategies and programs with existing community land management initiatives and co-ordinate links with related agencies.
• Conduct a regular evaluation of external initiatives and proposals and presenting them to traditional owners with respect to their suitability for achieving land management objectives.
• Identify opportunities for collaboration with regional stakeholders, mining interests and government agencies in relation to specific land management issues within the project area (e.g. Vehicle access, weeds & feral animal control)
• Liaise with government and non-government agencies, community organisations, and other regional stakeholders on relevant indigenous land use and management matters.
• Other duties that are safe, legal & logical while being within the limits of the employee’s skill, competence and training, and are consistent with the classification structure.

Job Requirements:

• High level writing skills with a demonstrated ability to analyse and understand a wide range of multi-disciplinary information and utilise it in the development of strategic programs and plans.
• Experience in preparing detailed cultural or ecological planning documents.
• Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and adhere to set work plans and priorities.
• Ability to travel, live and work in remote locations as a regular part of the job and conduct extended field work involving traditional owners, staff, and others (including effective collaboration with a range of regional and local agencies).
• Sound skills and experience in using Microsoft Office and a basic understanding of, and experience with, geographic information systems.
• Relevant qualifications and/or demonstrated professional competence in ecology, natural resource management or related fields.
• Demonstrated ability facilitating consultation and planning meetings with Aboriginal people, staff and external organisations.
• Appropriate level of health and fitness to meet the rigours of remote fieldwork including driving long distances in a 4WD vehicle, changing tyres and lifting up to 20kg as necessary.
• Good interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate effectively with people, particularly Aboriginal people.
• A current NT driver’s licence and the ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles safely in remote localities.
• Must hold (or be capable of holding and apply for) an Ochre Card from SafeNT and undertake a National Police Certificate assessment if required.
