Job Description:

The City of Santa Clarita is currently recruiting staff to work with Camp Clarita in summer 2022. Camp Clarita is a summer day camp program from June 13 – August 5, 2022 that serves children ages 3-15 at multiple locations, where they will participate in various activities including swimming, field trips, games, crafts, and more. The program has been modified for summer 2022 to follow the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines related to COVID-19.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines set forth
  • Recognize and address behavioral concerns
  • Acts as site director in their absence
  • Maintains various forms, logs, and reports; tracks inventory and organizes supplies
  • Follows and enforces City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
  • Attends meetings and assists with training Recreation Leader I’s, and Camp Counselors
  • Assists in organization, set-up, and clean-up of facility; opens or closes facility
  • Performs first aid, administers medication, and responds to emergencies; reports incidents and accidents
  • Other duties, as directed by Recreation Supervisor, Coordinator, and/or Camp Director
  • Tracks program participation
  • Effectively communicates with parents
  • Supervises and leads children; maintains staff/child ratio
  • Effectively addresses issues and concerns with participants as they arise
  • Organizes, prioritizes, and follows up on assignments
  • Greets patrons and participants and answers inquiries regarding programs
  • Organizes, plans, and works with other program areas, as requested; communicates with other City divisions/departments

  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to provide program information and respond to difficult and complex public inquiries and requests
  • Strong leadership and visioning skills and the ability to effectively mentor and guide others with clear directions
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights on occasion
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including inclement weather
  • Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a work group
  • Acts as a role model by displaying positive and courteous behaviors that campers and staff will admire and want to emulate
  • Strong work ethic, proactive, and the ability to learn quickly
  • Ability to swim
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those connected in the performance of required duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to make sound decisions within established guidelines and be a creative problem solver
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is required occasionally
  • Strong conflict management skills and ability to address issues with professionalism and tact

Qualification & Experience:

  • Leadership experience and completion of one year of college courses is highly desirable
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by June 10, 2022, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid certification. A Red Cross CPR/AED/FA course will be offered during Staff Training. Staff may elect to participate in this training (unpaid) at a cost of $21 for the certification.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • At least one-year of paid experience in in planning and leading activities for youth in a recreation, education, youth program, sport program, or other relatable setting
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license
