Job Description:

Darebin City Council is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Health Officer with a strong commitment to customer service to join our Health Protection Unit and provide an innovative, professional and highly responsive service to businesses and the public. Health Officers perform the duties and responsibilities of an Authorised Officer under the provisions of the Food Act 1984, Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008, Environment Protection Act 2017, Local Government Act 2020, Tobacco Act 1987, Residential Tenancies Act 1997.

Job Responsibilities:

• Investigate complaints about food safety and ensure shops, restaurants and food processors follow health regulations
• Investigate, evaluate and remedy instances of alleged nuisance or dangers to public health within the municipality
• Maintain records, prepare statistics, write reports and give evidence in court cases where health or environmental regulations have been violated
• Approve and register businesses within the municipality as required by the Food, Residential Tenancies and Public Health and Wellbeing Acts
• Investigate and manage public health notifications such as disease gastro outbreaks, anaphylaxis notifications Conduct food sampling and communicate results to the proprietor

Job Requirements:

• Qualification in Health Science, Public and Environmental Health, Applied Science or equivalent and eligible for membership of Environmental Health Professionals Australia (EHPA)
• Knowledge and understanding to interpret relevant legislation and carry out compliance checks and investigations
• Excellent communication, organisational, problem solving and interpersonal skills
• Ability to build positive relationships within a team environment and in a diverse community
• Current valid Victorian drivers’ licence Experience working in Local Government is desirable
