Job Description:

Antarctic Operations and Safety Branch plan, coordinate, facilitate and deliver operations for the Australian Antarctic Program by safely resupplying and sustaining the Antarctic Stations and building operational capacity to deliver future Antarctic projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Effectively managing aviation personnel within the Operations & Safety Branch both at Head Office and Antarctica, including any consultants and project leads to ensure that departmental objectives are met with a key focus on safety
  • Overseeing the management and coordinating of key design, maintenance, engineering, construction, test and acceptance activities for any future aviation capabilities and infrastructure, in-line with agreed project safety, compliance and contract processes and procedures
  • Through high-level, succinct reporting, providing visibility to the General Manager and the AAD Executive of the section’s current and future state of core aviation functions
  • The proactive identification, monitoring and management of risks and issues arising through the delivery of the AAD’s aviation program
  • Developing aviation policy, procedures and guidelines for situations involving a high level of complexity and sensitivity
  • Managing existing and any future aviation contracts, including monitoring financial budgets for area of responsibility
  • Maintaining an active awareness of contemporary and evolving developments in the field of commercial and Antarctic aviation, including airport operations, passenger and cargo aircraft operations, relevant legislation and regulation, specialist literature, journals and the work of other National Antarctic Programs
  • Representing the AAD at international and national professional and public forums related to Antarctic aviation operations.

Job Requirements:

  • Have demonstrated experience in a leadership role within the aviation industry or who are familiar with the planning and execution of operations and who are confident managers of contracts and personnel
  • Have a high level of understanding of Aviation legislation (domestic & international and how this is implemented into Antarctic operations) so as to ensure that safety & management of aviation risk is always the first priority.
