Job Description:

The Technology and Innovation Branch leads the design and development of new capabilities, and innovative and emerging technologies for the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP) and Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) in the areas of science, operations and asset management. The branch also manages core technical functions and facilities, curates and delivers data, mapping and information collections, and supports the AAD in providing platforms to deliver world leading AAP outcomes.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Portable, fixed and temporarily installed electrical equipment
  • Industrial control systems
  • Maintain sea-going containerised laboratories and workspaces and manage the electrical interface of these laboratories with the RSV Nuyina’s electrical and alarm systems
  • Provide support relating to electrical equipment and instrumentation in preparation for, and during, marine science voyage(s) or other expeditions, including constructing, modifying, fault finding/repairing, maintaining and operating equipment such as:
  • Custom oceanographic instrumentation
  • Troubleshoot modern scientific instrumentation and its interface with data loggers and data acquisition computer systems
  • Produce and maintain high-quality technical documentation and drawings within a formal engineering document management system
  • Engage and manage electrical contractors to carry out electrical work according to relevant Australian standards
  • Purchase and maintain inventory of electrical spares to support marine science on board the RSV Nuyina
  • Produce maintenance records to ensure electrical compliance of containerised laboratories and ancillary equipment
  • Implement and promote improved work practices which includes asset and hazardous goods management as well as maintenance of training programs and records in addition to managing safety documentation/systems for all personnel
  • Work productively and effectively both as an individual with limited supervision, as a team member and occasionally as the manager of small teams, to develop innovative solutions to meet technical or operational problems which may be in remote areas without immediate technical or logistical support.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in the application of Australian standards AS3000 and AS3760.
  • Demonstrated experience in the operation and troubleshooting of complex instrumentation systems based on a sound understanding of underlying physical principles.
  • demonstrate the range of personal qualities and interpersonal skills necessary to perform as a successful team member within isolated Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environments.
