Job Description: As a member of the Division’s executive team, the Deputy Fire Chief will be responsible for assisting in providing leadership, direction, and overall management for the Fire Rescue Division. The Deputy Fire Chief must be able to develop and maintain effective relationships with other agencies within the community, members of the International Association of Firefighters as well as, have excellent communication skills with all stakeholders to achieve the high standards the community has come to expect. Job Responsibilities: Administers suitable training and discipline. Coordinates Fire Rescue matters with various team leaders. Administers budget in accordance with established policies and procedures. Directs the preparation and analysis of records and reports to secure efficient operations and to meet Fire Rescue demands. May assume command of Fire Rescue in the absence of the Fire Rescue Director as the Director/Command Officer of Special Risk member(s) whose duties include on-the-scene fighting of fires, fire prevention and fire training. Plans, organizes and directs specific fire and rescue operations with respect to equipment, apparatus, and personnel. Develops long range fire protection and suppression programs. Assists in preparation of Fire Rescue’s annual budget and long range capital budget. Job Requirements: Knowledge of emergency medical services delivery systems and emergency management programs. Knowledge of the use and care of modern firefighting equipment and apparatus. Knowledge of current firefighter training techniques. Knowledge of emergency management principles and programs. Knowledge of the geography of the County including location of streets, water mains, fire hydrants, and fire hazards. Knowledge of current developments in EMS/Rescue, firefighting and fire prevention. Knowledge of the principles of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services administration and budgeting. Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS). Qualification & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of paid full-time experience in a management or supervisory capacity at the Volusia County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief level. Experience to include field operations at the incident command level and planning, directing, and coordinating activities in a Fire Rescue division or response district.
