Job Description:

As a member of the Division’s executive team, the Deputy Fire Chief will be responsible for assisting in providing leadership, direction, and overall management for the Fire Rescue Division. The Deputy Fire Chief must be able to develop and maintain effective relationships with other agencies within the community, members of the International Association of Firefighters as well as, have excellent communication skills with all stakeholders to achieve the high standards the community has come to expect.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Directs the preparation and analysis of records and reports to secure efficient operations and to meet Fire Rescue demands.
  • Directs the operations and maintenance of apparatus and equipment.
  • May assume command and direct operations of a fire scene or other emergency situation from a subordinate officer.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and periodic review of a division-wide safety program.
  • Ensures that all subordinate personnel complies with: Federal, State, and local regulations; terms of collective bargaining agreements; and all division standards.
  • Makes recommendations and provides input on proposals to be submitted for inclusion in the collective bargaining process.
  • Assists in preparation of Fire Rescue’s annual budget and long range capital budget.
  • Administers budget in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, associates, officials and the general public.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare budget submittals.
  • Ability to work closely with the Fire Chief and Fire Rescue Division staff in general.
  • Ability to understand the County’s budget process, purchasing, fund structures, and budget development process.
  • Able to work in government hierarchy and chain of command.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

Qualification & Experience:

  • A Bachelor degree in Fire Science, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of paid full time experience in a management or supervisory capacity at the Volusia County Fire Division Officer level or higher.
