Job Description:

The Planning Assistant – Statutory is primarily responsible for making recommendations on a range
of fast-tracked applications and planning applications and to provide town planning advice to a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Working under the supervision of Senior Planning Officers and Coordinators, the successful candidate will process a variety of planning applications, make recommendations to senior staff and respond quickly and accurately to enquiries about current or prospective planning applications, including assessments as to whether planning approval is required.

The role requires excellent communication skills, good analytical and reporting skills, the ability to
work independently to problem solve and with a team when necessary and an understanding of the
town planning practice, principles and legislation.

Prior experience in customer service is essential as the role is largely responsible for dealing with a
range of customers on the phone and in person.

Job Responsibilities:

  • To interpret and provide advice and recommendations on statutory planning issues to a wide range of customers including Council, staff, the development industry and community.
  • Ensure appropriate referrals of statutory planning matters and ensure a comprehensive analysis
    is undertaken in determining planning decisions.
  • Complete referrals, assessments and recommendations within the assigned Key Performance
    Indicator’s for that category of development application
  • Attend relevant public and agency meetings as required.
  • From time to time assist senior staff in the preparation,
    assessment, referral and advertising of Scheme Amendments, Structure Plans and Planning Policies and JDAP Applications
  • Ensure the implementation of City human resource policies, systems and programs, including equal opportunity practices and occupational safety and health.

Job Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of the role of the State Administrative Tribunal, Swan Valley Planning Committee, Midland Redevelopment Authority and Joint Development Assessment Panel.
  • Understanding of project management techniques to achieve timely outputs and outcomes consistent with Council’s Policies and Scheme provisions.
  • Able to respond to enquiries within the timeframes established by the Business Unit and/or Organisation.
  • Assist senior staff in providing planning advice to Council and the Executive, including research and the interpretation of the Scheme, as required.
  • Assist senior staff on matters involving the City’s solicitors regarding legal agreement and other planning matters, as required.
  • Act as a Planning Officer in the absence of the incumbent, as required.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Current ‘C’ class driver’s licence
  • Graduate degree in Urban & Regional Planning or related field
  • Post Graduate degree in Urban & Regional Planning or related field
  • Eligible for membership of the Planning Institute of Australia
  • Good knowledge of Town Planning practice and legislation
  • Customer service experience
  • Experience in Town Planning
  • At least one (1) year in a statutory planning position in Local Government, State Government
    or the private sector environment.
