Job Description:

You’ll be the custodian for all thing’s safety & risk, contributing to developing and delivering the safety strategies for the business and delivering improvements in safety performance and reduction in risk. You’ll provide effective line management and motivate those within the Safety and Environment Team to be a high performing team and create a great place to work.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and develop a good working knowledge of relevant: UK and EU health & safety legislation; and industry, company and other standards.
  • Responsible for implementing (or assisting in the implementation of) allocated aimsof the Business Plan, Safety Plan and Safety & Environment Project Plan, to achieve agreed targets and required deliverables.
  • Responsible for the leadership and development of an engaged, capable and high performing team of safety professionals (Safety Performance
  • Team and the Safety and Sustainability Assurance Manager), ensuring training & development needs are identified and delivered and that succession planning processes are in place.
  • Responsible for the effective management and delivery of the LNER accident (and near miss) reporting and investigation processes, including the production of appropriate recommendations and promulgation of lessons learned (internally and externally).
  • Responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of safety strategies that minimise risk and meet the requirements of the business and specifically focussing on the improvement of LNER’s safety and environment risk register.
  • Ensuring the development, maintenance and improvement of systems for the recording and analysis of statistical information relating to our performance on safety, environment and other related safety matters (such as crime); and for the effective, timely promulgation of data and statistical analysis to internal and external bodies.
  • Providing (or ensuring the provision of) competent, expert professional safety advice and assistance to all LNER functions; and for assisting in the development and implementation of functional/generic safety initiatives/improvement plans.
  • Responsible for the development and continuous improvement of the LNER’s Safety Management System, ensuring safety policies and procedures are fit for purpose, meet legislative/other requirements and achieve the delivery of ‘industry best practice’ safety performance.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience of development of risk management methodologies and the building or management of risk registers.
  • Comprehensive standards of education, a degree or higher degree/business qualification being desirable
  • Demonstrable competent knowledge of health and safety legislation/industry requirements
  • CMIOSH or GradIOSH
  • Experience in a senior safety position
  • Proven leadership and management qualities
