Job Description:
The Bushland and Waterways Officer reports directly to the Bushland Supervisor and is responsible for maintaining Council Bushland Reserves in accordance with best practice Conservation and Land Management practices and principles. Additionally, this role requires undertaking routine inspections, conducting audits, and reporting and advising on a maintenance program of Waterbody sites as part of an ongoing maintenance program.
Job Responsibilities:
- In consultation with the Bushland Supervisor, coordinate, plan and prioritise daily activities and organise materials to ensure efficient supplies for work continuity.
- Liaise with Team Leader Bushland Management and the Bushland Supervisor regarding the condition of Sites of Biological Significance (SBS) including waterways.
- Undertake audits and inspections of Maroondah’s Waterway sites and report findings of audits and progress of maintenance programs to Team Leader Bushland Management. Provide technical advice regarding Waterway operation when required and keep detailed record of waterbody audits using council record keeping systems.
- Implement and contribute to improving the Sites of Biological Significance works programs including but not limited to; integrated weed management, planting and seed collection, fire hazards clearance, ecological burn preparation, herbicide application, investigating and trialling alternative weed control, developing and implementing vegetation audits and data collection, fence construction and complete maintenance requests. Maintain detailed records of all daily works.objectives.
- This includes providing the Team Leader Bushland Management and the Engineering and Assets team with technical advice on matters pertaining to WSUD’s and Waterbodies when they’re not functioning effectively.
- Ensure vehicles, plant and equipment are maintained and operated in accordance with safety standards.
- Oversee, coach and mentor activities of trainees, students and/or apprentices.
Job Requirements:
- A trade qualification in Conservation and Land Management relevant to the role, which must be attained via Certificate III (via an apprenticeship provider) or Certificate IV or equivalent.
- Chemcert or ACUP qualifications and knowledge of indigenous flora, environmental weed species and local bushland ecology
- Current Victorian Drivers Licence (Manual)
- Ability to communicate with internal stakeholders (i.e. management and employees) and external stakeholders (i.e. general public) in achievement of team and organisational goals and objectives.
- Working With Children Id Card (Employee)
Qualification & Experience:
- A thorough understanding of Waterway operation and management practices, conducting waterway audits and demonstrated experience reporting and prioritising a works program for Waterways.
- Demonstrated experience in Conservation/Land Management or similar field
- Demonstrated experience in revegetation/regeneration of environmentally sensitive areas
