These positions are responsible for structural and civil site design work to support Southern Company’s Transmission and Distribution Substation Design Group as well as providing support to the Transmission Line Design Group. The Engineer will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel, concrete foundations, sitework/drainage, oil containment, etc. respectively with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. These positions will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.
  • Prepare high quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) substation and transmission facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
  • Structural Engineer: The Engineer in the Transmission Civil Design organization will be responsible for designing and analyzing new or modified existing substation structures. The Engineer will be expected to perform reinforced concrete foundation design and structural steel analysis/design on an as needed basis. The Engineer will work with younger engineers to help in their development. The Engineer will be responsible for supporting the planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with the civil portion of transmission substations and line projects.
  • Civil Site Engineer: The Engineer in the Civil Engineering Group will be responsible for civil site work design, including preparation of grading, drainage, and erosion control plans. The individual shall have a solid understanding of survey data required to perform a land development design. The engineer will be expected to perform foundation structural analysis/design on an as needed basis. The engineer will be responsible for supporting the planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with the civil portion of transmission substation and line projects. This position will also be responsible for tracking project expenditures.

Job Requirements:

  • Detailed knowledge of right-of-way clearing, environmental regulations, and crew support activities and associated costs.
  • Experience in reinforced concrete design
  • Detailed knowledge of cost estimating and quantity takeoffs.
  • Knowledge of the use of Inventor
  • Demonstrated ability to design a land development project including site grading, stormwater design, erosion control, and permitting.
  • Design experience in transmission structures is a plus, but not required
  • Detailed knowledge of civil construction methods, equipment, techniques and associated costs.
  • For Civil Site Engineer:
  • Experience with analyzing steel connections
  • General knowledge of the activities associated with surveying, land acquisition, and obtaining easements.
  • Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes
  • Detailed knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing civil grading design and construction as it relates to NPDES, and general construction principals.
  • Proficient with ANSYS, MathCAD and STAAD Pro
  • For Structural Engineer:
  • Experience in deep foundation design utilizing AllPile, LPILE, FAD Tools

Qualification & Experience:

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification required.
  • BS in Civil Engineering strongly preferred.
  • A Professional Engineers (PE) license in the state of Georgia is required or the ability to obtain such license.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required.
