Website Unilever

Job Description:

The job holder will be a member Foods & Refreshment (F&R) Science & Technology team based at Colworth Science Park. The team is concerned with the formulation and manufacturing of food product microstructures, the development and scale up of new processing technologies and understanding ingredients and their interactions to yield differentiated superior quality products. Cryo-SEM is a key technique for microstructural evaluation of our core products, such as ice cream and is therefore a fundamental measurement tool for many research projects. The role involves the leadership and development of the microscopy capability, with special emphasis on cryo-SEM. In addition to carrying out microscopic measurements and communicating findings to project teams, the job holder will ensure that our microstructural analysis capabilities remain relevant and up to date to give the most accurate and relevant insights.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the use of dedicated internal and external resources as necessary (synchrotron, etc.)
  • Refine the image and data processing tools (i.e. image analysis and digital visualisation) used by the measurement team to improve extraction of data from captured images
  • Planning, preparation and imaging of samples using advanced microscopy techniques (primarily cryo-SEM, but also ambient SEM, confocal microscopy, TEM and staining techniques) to gain relevant insights for project teams.
  • Apply, refine and develop new techniques around contrast generation, imaging and sample preparation for new and unmet research needs
  • Interface with suppliers and external partners to identify, explore and champion new technological developments. Build a strong network in the external microscopy community.
  • Develop a detailed understanding of the techniques and instrumentation in order to troubleshoot and maintain internal capability
  • Champion microstructural techniques and provide in-depth interpretation of results to internal project teams.

Job Requirements:

  • The ability to learn quickly on the job
  • A proactive self-starter with curiosity to explore and evaluate novel methods and techniques.
  • Strong team alignment to deliver to diverse customer project requirements and timelines.
  • Can-do attitude with confidence around scientific equipment.
  • Degree in biology, chemistry, physics or related science
  • Strong analytical skills to input into the wider team objectives
  • Experience in one of the following microscopic techniques: confocal microscopy, RICS, SEM, TEM, XRT (ideally on a daily basis with responsibility of all aspects of operation)
