Job Description:

A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation’s most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare design criteria for smaller or less complex portions of conventional roads, facilities, utility systems, or structures.
  • Conduct preliminary surveys and site investigations to obtain baseline and field data on soils, topography, drainage, existing structures and utilities, and feasible layout of proposed roads, facilities, or structures in relation to terrain.
  • Supervise inspection of construction operations for compliance with intent of design and specifications.
  • Observe and investigate construction at all stages to identify problems, take timely action to change designs within delegated authority, or recommend changes to solve problems.
  • Plan and conduct civil engineering projects according to clear and specified objectives.
  • Complete inspections and evaluation of the conditions of facilities and structures to ensure accuracy, existing standards, codes, regulations and requirements, and suitability of final design.

Job Requirements:

  • Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Specialized experience for the GS-07 grade level is defined as three or more of the following: Performing basic engineering analyses or assisting in preparation of conventional engineering plans; and/or assisting in designing and developing routine construction drawings or specifications for projects; and/or completing site visits and assisting with inspections to ensure construction was in compliance with regulations and established contract specifications; and/or gathering data by performing basic surveys and investigations.
