Job Description:

This is a Research Engineer-Scientist position in the Resid R&D team in the Applied Technology group of the Process Research Division under Downstream Technology Service of Chevron Energy Technology Company. Researchers in this team support catalyst and process development projects for TEMA, CLG/ART. Resid hydro processing projects include catalyst and process development and deployment and technical support for residuum hydrotreating (RDS, VRDS, UFR-RDS, OCR-RDS) and residuum hydrocracking (LC-FINING, LC-MAX, LC-SLURRY and LC-LSFO) to upgrade residuum (AR and/or VR) into valuable products, including distillates, VGOs and fuel oils. TEMA and CLG/ART projects include experimental work in both large and complex research units and bench scale units, and experimental catalyst development synthesis work. This R&D position offers opportunities to work directly with customers and commercial applications of the catalyst and process technologies both inside of Chevron and around the world.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Transfer technology from the laboratory to commercial operation.
  • Responsible for safe and reliable operation of the testing operation and ensure compliance with all the OE requirements.
  • Design and conduct laboratory, bench scale and research unit testing programs using various testing and analytical equipment.
  • Use knowledge of heterogeneous catalysis and/or refining processes to invent and innovate new concepts, catalysts, and/or process configurations in residuum hydro processing (hydrotreating, hydrocracking, and slurry hydrocracking).
  • Conduct technical programs in residuum hydro processing catalyst system optimization and catalyst development, process optimization and commercial operation troubleshooting in support of TEMA and JV customers. This involves keeping close contacts with customers, working closely with the technology and catalyst proposal and technical service team, presenting and sharing of test results and ensuring involvement of all the stakeholders in planning/design/interpretation of test results.

Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry
  • A minimum of 2 years of research experience in Catalyst and Process Development, including hands-on experimental and laboratory experience
  • Ph.D. curriculum must include preferably study in heterogeneous catalysis or chemical reaction engineering or analogous-relevant field
    Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong OE awareness
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
